Thermal Imagers, creative uses?

Postby rchristen118 on Sat Apr 05, 2008 3:07 am

To get the ball rolling we are posing the following question: What are some creative ways that you use thermal imaging cameras beyond the standard search and rescue uses. :?:

I have heard about using a Thermal Imager from the outside of a building to try to find the fire inside. I have never tried it, but I am wondering if anyone else has, and how well it works. ;)

I think using the T.I.C. from the exterior is worth the few seconds it takes... but it would seem that construction type and exterior temps could hinder the effort. A brick/block type construction on a hot day could appear hotter from side 1 (sunny side) when the fire is really in another part of the house.
None-the-less, it's too much of a simple tactic to discard. Take a look, you never know what you might see.

If you become lost, separated, or otherwise disoriented inside a structure, the TIC could be used to find an ideal spot for a wall breach, a near-by door, or even a window if you know what you're looking for. Doors and other construction features all absorb/reflect heat differently. Some exterior doors are made of a wooden inside with a metal exterior, which would cause it to stand out against the sheetrock around it.

I think it’s a good idea to use the TIC if you have time before you enter the building. The only thing I can add is that the TIC has a hard time with shinny surfaces. Any shinny surface like windows, metal walls, and plastic surfaces will show hot spots. Just keep in mind if you can see your reflection in the item it will show hot!!!!

Anyone out there ever used the TIC for hazmat purposes ? I was recently suprised to see that ours was viewing light ballast clear across a large department store. Then I began wondering, if the TIC could be used from a safe, non-acidic atmosphere to find leaking pressurized containers, or be used as a means of recon when dealing dealing with, or identifying exothermic reactions. Our district has a few places that store numerous pressurized cylinders together. In the event of a leak or suspicious odor, I wonder if it could be used to locate or eliminate certain possibilities.

We always think of using the TIC during a fire, but also think outside the box when it comes to other calls: how many companies also run motor vehicle accidents? How many times is it in the middle of the night and you can't find a body or suspect an ejection? the TIC is very useful tool when you have to search a large area such as a farmers field. saves time and manpower in the search. Hazmat calls, can be used to look for leaking containers. The TIC just may give you that extra safety barrier you need. I recommend every firefighter conduct numerous training evolutions with this piece of gear.
